That Fear

That Fear

The Bible talks about two very different kinds of fear. One is wrong and harmful, and the other is good and healthy. Understanding the difference helps many passages make sense. 📖

1. Spirit of Fear (Fear that comes from the enemy)

This type of fear is fear, anxiety, intimidation, and timidity that weakens faith.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
II. Timothy 1:7

This kind of fear:

  • Creates anxiety and worry

  • Stops people from trusting God

  • Makes people afraid to obey God

  • Brings bondage and torment

Example:
Fear of failure, fear of people, fear of the future.

Another verse says:

“Perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment.”
I. John 4:18

This is the fear God does NOT want to control our lives.

2. Fear of the Lord (Reverence for God)

The fear of God in the Bible does not mean being terrified of Him. It means deep reverence, awe, honor, and respect for God.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
Proverbs 9:10

This type of fear means:

  • Respecting God’s authority

  • Honoring God's holiness

  • Taking God's Word seriously

  • Wanting to obey God

It produces wisdom and a righteous life.

Another verse says:

“By the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.”
 Proverbs 16:6

Simple Comparison

Wrong FearFear of the Lord
Comes from fear, anxiety, or the enemy    Comes from reverence for God
Produces bondage and worry    Produces wisdom and obedience
Weakens faith    Strengthens faith
God did not give it    God commands it

Simple way to remember:

  • Spirit of fear = being afraid of everything

  • Fear of the Lord = having deep respect and awe for God

Becoming Servants of Christ When we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we become Christians—and more than that, we become servants of Christ . As servants, we are spiritually inducted into the “hall of servanthood.” Our new identity calls us to live differently. A brochure, flyer, or p...
