Fruit of the Spirit Lesson/Back Story
Primary Scripture: Epistle to the Galatians 5:22–23 (KJV)
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Back Story
Paul, the Apostle, wrote the book of Galatians to the churches in the region of Galatia. After Paul shared the gospel and many people became believers, some teachers began telling Christians they had to follow the Old Testament Law—especially circumcision—in order to be truly saved.
Paul wrote to correct this false teaching. He explained that people are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, not by keeping the Law. However, he also made it clear that Christians are not free to live sinful lives. Instead, believers should allow the Holy Spirit to guide their thoughts, words, and actions.
In Galatians 5, Paul contrasts two ways of living:
- The works of the flesh (our sinful nature), which produce sinful behaviors.
- The fruit of the Spirit, which is the godly character produced in believers by the Holy Spirit.
Just as healthy fruit grows naturally on a healthy tree, these spiritual qualities grow in the life of someone who walks with God.
What Is the Fruit of the Spirit?
The word "fruit" is singular, showing that these qualities together describe the character the Holy Spirit develops in every believer.

Important Lessons
- The Fruit of the Spirit is produced by the Holy Spirit, not by human effort alone.
- Spiritual growth takes time, just as fruit takes time to mature.
- Christians should become more like Jesus every day.
- The Fruit of the Spirit is evidence that God is working in a believer's life.
- Walking with the Holy Spirit helps us overcome sinful desires.
Life Application
Ask yourself:
- Am I showing love to others?
- Do I have joy even during difficult times?
- Am I patient with people?
- Do my words show kindness?
- Can others see Christ in my attitude?
- Am I practicing self-control in my choices?
Pray daily for the Holy Spirit to help these qualities grow in your life.
Key Takeaway
The Fruit of the Spirit is the visible evidence of God's work in a believer's life. As we stay close to Christ, obey His Word, and follow the Holy Spirit's leading, our character gradually becomes more like Jesus. These qualities not only strengthen our relationship with God but also show His love to the world.
