Miracle of Jesus #5
Jesus Healing Peter's Mother-In-Law is found in all three Synoptic Gospels
(Matthew 8:14-15, Mark 1:29-31, Luke 4:38-39)
The Story:
Peter's house in Capernaum, immediately after Jesus taught in the synagogue and cast out the unclean spirit.
Setting:
The situation: Peter's mother-in-law was lying in bed with a high fever.
The request: They told Jesus about her illness (Luke mentions they "asked him to help her").
The healing:
Jesus approached her bedside
He took her by the hand and helped her up (Mark)
He rebuked the fever (Luke)
The fever left her immediately
Her response: She got up at once and began to serve/wait on them.
What Happened Next:
That evening (after sunset, when the Sabbath ended), people brought many who were sick and demon-possessed to Jesus. He healed many with various diseases and cast out demons.
Significance:
- Shows Jesus's personal compassion—healing in a private, domestic setting demonstrates his power over physical illness (fever).
- Her immediate recovery and service showed the completeness of the healing, confirms Peter was married (important historical detail).
- The healing was simple and direct—no elaborate ritual, just his touch and word, led to a larger healing ministry that evening as word spread.
This intimate miracle shows Jesus cared about individual suffering, not just public displays of power.
