Miracle #18
The story of Jesus healing a mute, demon-possessed man is found in Matthew 9:32-34.
The Story:
The timing: While they (the two blind men) were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus
The exorcism: And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke
The crowd's amazement: The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel"
The Pharisees' accusation: But the Pharisees said, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons"
Significance:
- This happened immediately after Jesus healed the two blind men—showing a rapid succession of miracles
- The man was brought to Jesus—he couldn't ask for help himself because he couldn't speak
- The muteness was caused by demonic possession, not a physical defect
- This shows that demons can cause physical disabilities and impairments
- Jesus drove out the demon—the exorcism was the solution
- The healing was immediate—as soon as the demon left, the man could speak
- This was a double miracle: deliverance from demonic possession and restoration of speech
- The crowd recognized this as unprecedented: "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel"
- They were witnessing the power of the Messiah in action
- The Pharisees, however, attributed Jesus's power to "the prince of demons" (Beelzebul/Satan)
- This was the beginning of the blasphemous accusation that Jesus worked by Satan's power
- They couldn't deny the miracle, so they attacked the source of his authority
- This accusation would later lead to Jesus's teaching about the unforgivable sin (Matthew 12:22-32)
- The contrast is stark: the common people were amazed and believed; the religious leaders were hostile and blasphemous
- Jesus's authority over demons that cause physical afflictions
- That spiritual bondage can manifest in physical ways
- The immediate and complete nature of Jesus's deliverance
- How Jesus's miracles were unprecedented in Israel's history
- The different responses to Jesus: faith and amazement vs. hardness and accusation
- That religious knowledge doesn't guarantee spiritual insight
- The Pharisees' spiritual blindness despite their religious position
- The beginning of organized opposition to Jesus from religious authorities
- That some will attribute God's work to Satan rather than submit to the truth
This story powerfully illustrates:
The healing of the mute, demon-possessed man demonstrates Jesus's comprehensive power to deliver and restore, while also revealing the tragic reality that some will reject even the clearest evidence of God's power when it challenges their authority and worldview. This brief account sets the stage for the growing conflict between Jesus and the religious establishment.
