Miracles of Jesus #10 (Jesus Heals A Man With A Withered Hand)

Miracle #10

Jesus healing a man with a withered hand in the synagogue is found in all three Synoptic Gospels: Matthew 12:9-14, Mark 3:1-6, and Luke 6:6-11.

The Story:

Setting: A synagogue on the Sabbath where Jesus was teaching
The man: A man with a shriveled/withered hand was present.
The trap: The Pharisees and teachers of the law were watching Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so they could accuse him.
The question: They asked Jesus, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"
Jesus's response: He asked them, "Is it lawful to do good or evil on the Sabbath, to save life or destroy it?" He also used the example: if a sheep falls into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn't you pull it out?
Jesus's emotion: He looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart (Mark).
The command: Jesus told the man, "Stretch out your hand."
The healing: The man stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
The reaction: The Pharisees were furious and began plotting with the Herodians how to kill Jesus’s

Significance:

  • Highlighted the conflict between Jesus and religious authorities over Sabbath laws
  • Showed Jesus valued compassion over rigid rule-keeping.
  • Demonstrated that doing good is always appropriate, even on the Sabbath.
  • Revealed the hardness of heart among religious leaders who cared more about rules than people.
  • The man's obedience (stretching out his hand) was part of his healing.

This miracle intensified opposition to Jesus, leading to plots against his life.
This story emphasizes Jesus's priority: people and mercy over legalistic traditions.
