Miracles of Jesus #11 (Jesus Heals the Centurion's Son)

Miracle #11

The story of Jesus healing the centurion's servant is found in Matthew 8:5-13 (also in Luke 7:1-10).

The Story:

The approach: When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help

The request: "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly"

Jesus's offer: Jesus said to him, "Shall I come and heal him?"

The centurion's reply: The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed"

His reasoning: "For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it"

Jesus's amazement: When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, "Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith"

The prophecy: Jesus continued, "I say to you that many will come from the east and the west and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth"

The healing: Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that moment

Significance:

  • This is a long-distance healing—Jesus didn't need to be physically present
  • The centurion was a Gentile (Roman military officer), yet showed extraordinary faith
  • His humility was remarkable—he felt unworthy to have Jesus enter his home
  • He understood Jesus's authority: just as he commanded soldiers, Jesus commanded sickness
  • This was one of the few times Jesus expressed amazement
  • The centurion's faith surpassed that of anyone in Israel
  • Jesus used this to prophesy that Gentiles would enter God's kingdom while many Jews would be excluded
  • The healing was instantaneous and complete
  • It demonstrated that faith, not ethnicity or status, is what matters to Jesus
  • The centurion cared deeply for his servant, showing compassion across social barriers
  • This miracle foreshadowed the gospel going to the Gentiles

This story powerfully illustrates that true faith recognizes Jesus's absolute authority, that God's kingdom is open to all who believe (not just Jews), and that Jesus can heal anywhere, anytime—distance is no barrier to his power.
