Miracle #16
The story of Jesus raising Jairus's daughter from the dead is found in Mark 5:35-43 (also in Matthew 9:23-26 and Luke 8:49-56).
The Story:
The interruption: While Jesus was still speaking to the woman with the issue of blood, messengers came from Jairus's house
The bad news: They told Jairus, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher anymore?"
Jesus's response: Overhearing this, Jesus told Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe"
The inner circle: Jesus allowed only Peter, James, and John to accompany him to the house
The scene: When they arrived, there was commotion—people crying and wailing loudly
Jesus's statement: He said, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep"
Their reaction: The mourners laughed at him, knowing she was dead
Clearing the room: Jesus put everyone out except the child's parents and his three disciples
The miracle: He took the girl by the hand and said, "Talitha koum!" (Aramaic for "Little girl, I say to you, get up!")
The result: Immediately the twelve-year-old girl stood up and began to walk around
The reaction: Everyone was completely astonished
Jesus's instructions: He gave strict orders not to tell anyone, and told them to give her something to eat
Significance:
- Demonstrated Jesus's power over death itself
- Showed his compassion—he called her "little girl" (tender, personal)
- The detail of giving her food showed the completeness of her restoration to life
- Jesus used physical touch (taking her hand), showing death didn't make her unclean to him
- The Aramaic words preserved in the text emphasize the authenticity and intimacy of the moment
- Required faith from Jairus despite devastating news
- Only his closest disciples witnessed this profound miracle
- Foreshadowed Jesus's own resurrection
This miracle reveals Jesus as the Lord of life who has authority even over death.
