Miracles of Jesus #17 (Healing Two Blind Men)

 Miracle #17

The story of Jesus healing two blind men is found in Matthew 9:27-31.

The Story:

The pursuit: As Jesus went on from there (after raising Jairus's daughter), two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"

Following inside: When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him

Jesus's question: And he asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied

Jesus's touch: Then he touched their eyes

Jesus's declaration: And said, "According to your faith let it be done to you"

The healing: And their sight was restored

The warning: Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this"

The disobedience: But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region

Significance:

  • The blind men showed persistence—they followed Jesus and kept calling out
  • They addressed him as "Son of David"—a messianic title recognizing him as the promised king from David's line
  • This was a bold declaration of faith in Jesus's identity
  • Their cry "Have mercy on us" showed humility and dependence
  • They followed Jesus indoors—showing determination despite their blindness
  • Jesus tested their faith with a direct question: "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"
  • Their response was simple and direct: "Yes, Lord"
  • Jesus touched their eyes—a personal, compassionate gesture
  • The healing was "according to your faith"—linking the miracle to their trust in him
  • The restoration was immediate and complete—"their sight was restored"
  • Jesus sternly warned them not to tell anyone (the "messianic secret" theme in the Gospels)
  • He likely wanted to avoid being seen merely as a miracle worker or political messiah
  • The men disobeyed and spread the news widely
  • Their excitement was understandable, but it made Jesus's ministry more difficult
  • This fulfilled messianic prophecy—the Messiah would open blind eyes (Isaiah 35:5; 42:7)
  • The importance of persistent faith—they kept following and calling out
  • Recognizing Jesus's true identity as the Messiah (Son of David)
  • That Jesus responds to humble pleas for mercy
  • Faith is essential for receiving from Jesus—"according to your faith"
  • Jesus's personal touch and compassion in healing
  • The immediate and complete nature of his healing power
  • That gratitude and excitement can lead to well-meaning disobedience
  • How spreading news of miracles could hinder Jesus's broader mission

This story powerfully illustrates:

The healing of the two blind men demonstrates that Jesus is the promised Messiah who opens blind eyes, and that persistent faith in his identity and power leads to transformation. Their use of the title "Son of David" shows they understood who Jesus truly was, and their faith was rewarded with complete restoration of sight.
