Miracle #19
The story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 is found in Mark 6:30-44 (and in all four Gospels—Matthew 14, Luke 9, John 6).
The Story:
Setting: The apostles returned from their mission and reported to Jesus all they had done
Jesus's invitation: He said, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest"
The interruption: So many people were coming and going they didn't even have a chance to eat, so they went by boat to a solitary place
The crowd: Many people saw them leaving, recognized them, and ran on foot from all the towns, arriving ahead of them
Jesus's compassion: When Jesus landed and saw the large crowd, he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, so he began teaching them
The problem: Late in the day, the disciples urged Jesus to send the people away to buy food in nearby villages
Jesus's challenge: He replied, "You give them something to eat"
The resources: They said, "That would take more than half a year's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread?" Jesus asked, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." They found five loaves and two fish
The organization: Jesus had the people sit down in groups on the green grass (groups of hundreds and fifties)
The blessing: Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, gave thanks, and broke the loaves
The distribution: He gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and he also divided the two fish among them all
The result: Everyone ate and was satisfied
The leftovers: The disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish
The count: About 5,000 men had eaten (not counting women and children)
Significance:
- Demonstrated Jesus's creative power and provision
- Showed his compassion—he cared about physical needs, not just spiritual teaching
- The miracle echoed God's provision of manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16)
- Foreshadowed the Lord's Supper (took, blessed, broke, gave)
- The twelve baskets of leftovers showed God's abundance—more than enough
- Jesus involved the disciples in the miracle (they distributed the food)
- Revealed Jesus as the Bread of Life (especially emphasized in John 6)
- The organized seating showed order in Jesus's ministry
*This is the only miracle (besides the resurrection) recorded in all four Gospels*
This miracle shows Jesus as the provider who satisfies both physical and spiritual hunger with abundance.
