Miracle #2
The story of Jesus healing the royal official's son is found in (John 4:46-54).
The Story:
The setting: Jesus came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine
The official: There was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum (about 20 miles away)
The journey: When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him
The plea: He begged Jesus to come and heal his son, who was close to death
Jesus's challenge: Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe"
The persistent request: The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies"
Jesus's word: Jesus replied, "Go, your son will live"
The man's faith: The man took Jesus at his word and departed
The confirmation: While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living
The timing question: When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him"
The realization: Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live"
The result: So, he and his whole household believed
Significance:
- This was Jesus's second sign/miracle in Cana (the first was turning water into wine)
- The official was likely a Gentile or at least worked for Herod Antipas
- He showed great faith by traveling 20 miles to find Jesus
- Jesus challenged the need for signs, yet still showed mercy
- This was another long-distance healing—Jesus didn't need to be physically present
- The official believed Jesus's word without seeing the healing
- The healing was instantaneous—at the exact moment Jesus spoke
- The servants' report confirmed the precise timing of the miracle
- The official's faith led to his entire household believing
- Shows Jesus's power over distance, disease, and death
- Demonstrates that true faith trusts Jesus's word alone
- The official went from desperate plea to simple trust
- His persistence in the face of Jesus's initial challenge showed genuine faith
