Miracles of Jesus #20

Miracle #20

The story of Jesus walking on water is found in Mark 6:45-52 (also in Matthew 14:22-33 and John 6:16-21).

The Story:

Setting: Immediately after feeding the 5,000

The dismissal: Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd

Jesus alone: After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray

The struggle: Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and the disciples were straining at the oars because the wind was against them

Jesus's approach: Shortly before dawn (the fourth watch of the night, about 3-6 AM), Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake

His intention: He was about to pass by them

Their reaction: When they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost and cried out

Their terror: They all saw him and were terrified

Jesus's reassurance: Immediately he spoke to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid"

Joining them: He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down

Their amazement: They were completely amazed

Their hardness: Mark notes they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened

Significance:

  • Demonstrated Jesus's power over nature and the laws of physics
  • Showed Jesus as divine—only God "treads on the waves of the sea" (Job 9:8)
  • Jesus was praying while the disciples struggled, yet he was aware of their need
  • "It is I" (Greek: "ego eimi") echoes God's name "I AM" from Exodus 3:14
  • The disciples' lack of understanding connected to missing the meaning of the feeding miracle
  • Jesus came to them in their time of struggle and fear
  • His presence brought immediate calm (the wind stopped)
  • Revealed the disciples' spiritual dullness despite witnessing amazing miracles
  • In Matthew's account, Peter also walked on water briefly, showing faith and doubt

This miracle reveals Jesus's divine nature and his presence with his followers during life's storms, even when they don't fully understand who he is.
