Miracle #25
The story of Jesus healing a blind man at Bethsaida is found in Mark 8:22-26. This is unique among Jesus's healing miracles.
The Story:
Setting: The village of Bethsaida
The request: Some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged him to touch the man
Taking him aside: Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village
The method: Jesus spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him
The first question: Jesus asked, "Do you see anything?"
Partial healing: The man looked up and said, "I see people; they look like trees walking around" (blurry, unclear vision)
The second touch: Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes again
Complete healing: The man's eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly
The instruction: Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't even go into the village"
Significance:
- This is the only miracle in the Gospels where Jesus healed in stages/gradually
- Shows Jesus's personal, individualized approach—he took the man aside privately
- The two-stage healing may symbolize the disciples' gradual understanding of who Jesus was (this story comes right before Peter's confession that Jesus is the Messiah)
- Jesus used physical means (spit, touch) showing healing could come through various methods
- The man's honest response ("I see people like trees") shows the process of healing
- Jesus's instruction not to return to the village suggests avoiding publicity
- Demonstrates Jesus's patience and thoroughness—he didn't stop at partial healing
This unique miracle reminds us that spiritual insight and healing can sometimes be gradual processes, not always instantaneous.
