Miracle #3
First Miraculous Catch of Fish
Scripture: Luke 5:1–11
After an unproductive night of fishing, Jesus instructs Peter to cast his nets again. The catch is so large the nets nearly break.
The Story:
The crowd: One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret (Sea of Galilee), the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God
The boats: He saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets
Using the boat: He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon (Peter), and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat
The command: When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch"
Simon's objection: Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets"
The catch: When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break
Calling for help: So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink
Peter's response: When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus's knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"
The amazement: For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners
Jesus's call: Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will fish for people"
The commitment: So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him
Significance:
- This miracle led to the calling of Jesus's first disciples
- The fishermen had worked all night (the best time for fishing) and caught nothing
- Jesus, a carpenter, told professional fishermen where and when to fish
- Peter's obedience despite his doubts: "But because you say so, I will let down the nets"
- The catch was so abundant it defied natural explanation—nets breaking, boats sinking
- Peter's immediate recognition of Jesus's holiness and his own sinfulness
- Peter's response was worship and confession, not celebration of the catch
- Jesus used their profession to illustrate their future mission: "fishers of people"
- The miracle demonstrated Jesus's authority over nature and provision
- Their response was radical—they left everything (including a massive catch of fish) to follow Jesus
- James and John were also called at this moment
This showed that following Jesus means leaving security and abundance for faith and mission
This miracle powerfully illustrates Jesus's ability to provide abundantly, his call to discipleship, and the proper response to encountering his holiness. It also shows that Jesus meets people in their everyday work and transforms their vocations into kingdom purposes. The disciples' willingness to leave everything—including a fortune in fish—demonstrates the cost and priority of following Jesus.
