Miracle #30
The story of Jesus healing a woman who had been crippled for 18 years is found in Luke 13:10-17.
The Story:
Setting: Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath
The woman: A woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years
Her condition: She was bent over and could not straighten up at all
Jesus's initiative: When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity"
The healing: He put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God
The ruler's anger: Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath"
Jesus's rebuke: The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?"
Jesus's argument: "Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"
The opponents' shame: When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated
The people's joy: But the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing
Significance:
- Jesus took the initiative—the woman didn't ask for healing
- She had suffered for 18 years, showing long-term, chronic affliction
- Jesus called her "a daughter of Abraham," affirming her dignity and worth
- He attributed her condition to Satan's bondage, showing spiritual warfare
- The healing was immediate and complete
- Her first response was to praise God
- The synagogue ruler was more concerned about rules than compassion
- Jesus exposed the hypocrisy: they cared for animals on the Sabbath but not people
- His logic: if it's right to untie an animal for water, how much more to untie a person from Satan's bondage?
- This was another Sabbath controversy showing Jesus's true understanding of God's law
- The contrast: religious leaders were humiliated, common people were delighted
- Demonstrated that the Sabbath is for liberation and restoration, not restriction
This story powerfully illustrates Jesus's compassion for the marginalized (a woman, disabled, suffering long-term), his authority over Satan's power, and his mission to bring freedom. It also exposes how religious legalism can blind people to God's mercy and make them value rules over people.
