Miracle #31
The story of Jesus healing a man with dropsy on the Sabbath is found in Luke 14:1-6.
The Story:
Setting: One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee
Being watched: The people there were carefully watching him
The man: Right in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling/dropsy (edema—fluid retention causing swelling)
Jesus's question: Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"
Their silence: But they remained silent
The healing: So Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him on his way
Jesus's challenge: Then he asked them, "If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?"
Their response: They had nothing to say
Significance:
- Jesus was being watched/tested by religious leaders during a meal
- He took the initiative—asking the question before healing
- The Pharisees' silence showed they were trapped: saying "no" would seem heartless; saying "yes" would contradict their traditions
- Jesus healed anyway, prioritizing compassion over religious rules
- His argument used their own logic: they would rescue an animal on the Sabbath, so why not heal a person?
- Dropsy was a chronic, debilitating condition causing great discomfort
- This was one of several Sabbath healings that created conflict with religious authorities
- Jesus demonstrated that doing good and showing mercy is always appropriate
- The religious leaders cared more about rules than people
- Shows Jesus's authority over the Sabbath and his mission to bring freedom, not bondage
This story illustrates Jesus's compassion, his challenge to legalistic religion, and the truth that the Sabbath was made for human flourishing, not as a burden. It reveals the hardness of religious hearts that valued tradition over mercy.
