Miracle #6

Healing Many Sick and Demon-Possessed (Evening at Capernaum)
Scripture: Mark 1:32–34; Matthew 8:16–17; Luke 4:40–41
Crowds bring the sick and oppressed; Jesus heals them all.

The Story:

The timing: That evening after sunset (when the Sabbath ended), the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.

The gathering: The whole town gathered at the door (of Peter's house)

The healings: Jesus healed many who had various diseases

Individual attention: Luke adds that Jesus laid his hands on each one of them and healed them

The exorcisms: He also drove out many demons

Silencing the demons: But he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was (Luke specifies: they knew he was the Messiah/Christ)

The demons' testimony: Luke records that the demons came out of many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak

Prophecy fulfilled: Matthew adds that this fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases" (Isaiah 53:4)

Significance:

This happened immediately after Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law and cast out the demon in the synagogue

  • People waited until sunset (when the Sabbath officially ended) to bring the sick—showing they observed Sabbath restrictions on carrying burdens.
  • "The whole town" gathered—showing Jesus's fame had spread rapidly.
  • Jesus healed "many" with various diseases—showing his power over all kinds of sickness.
  • Luke emphasizes Jesus's personal touch—he laid hands on each individual person.
  • This was mass healing, yet with individual attention and compassion.
  • Jesus demonstrated authority over both physical disease and spiritual oppression.
  • He silenced the demons to control the timing and manner of revealing his identity.
  • The demons recognized him as the Messiah and Son of God—supernatural knowledge.
  • Jesus didn't want testimony from evil spirits, even if it was true.
  • Matthew connects this to Isaiah's prophecy about the suffering servant.
  • Shows Jesus's mission to bear our sicknesses and take away our infirmities.
  • Demonstrates Jesus's compassion—he didn't turn anyone away.
  • This was exhausting ministry that went late into the evening.

This passage powerfully illustrates:

  • Jesus's unlimited healing power—he could heal all kinds of diseases
  • His compassion for suffering people—giving individual attention to each person
  • His authority over the demonic realm
  • His strategic control over when and how his identity was revealed
  • The fulfillment of messianic prophecy
  • That Jesus came to bear our burdens and bring wholeness

This mass healing event established Jesus as the compassionate healer who has power over all sickness and evil, and who personally cares for each individual who comes to him.
