Miracle #8
Jesus healing the paralyzed man lowered through the roof is found in all three Synoptic Gospels:
Matthew 9:1-8, Mark 2:1-12, and Luke 5:17-26.
The crowd: The house was so packed with people (including Pharisees and teachers of the law) that no one could get through the door.
The friends: Four men carried a paralyzed man on a mat, trying to bring him to Jesus.
The problem: They couldn't get through the crowd.
The solution: They went up on the roof, removed the tiles/dug through it, and lowered their friend down on his mat right in front of Jesus.
Jesus's response: Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
The controversy: The religious leaders thought this was blasphemy—only God can forgive sins.
Jesus's challenge: He asked which is easier: to say "your sins are forgiven" or "get up and walk"?
The proof: To demonstrate he had authority to forgive sins, Jesus told the man: "Get up, take your mat and go home."
The miracle: The man immediately stood up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of everyone.
The reaction: The crowd was amazed and glorified God, saying they had never seen anything like this.
Significance:
- Demonstrated the faith and determination of the paralyzed man's friends.
- Revealed Jesus's authority to forgive sins, (a divine prerogative).
- Showed that Jesus cared about spiritual healing as much as physical healing.
- The physical healing proved his spiritual authority.
- Challenged the religious establishment's understanding of Jesus's identity.
- Illustrated that faith can overcome obstacles, (literally breaking through barriers).
This miracle is particularly memorable for the friends' creative persistence and Jesus's linking of physical and spiritual healing.
