Tomorrow Is Not Promised

Tomorrow Is Not Promised – Bible Lesson & Back Story

Primary Scriptures: James 4:13–15 (KJV)

"Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that."

Back Story

The Apostle James the Just wrote this letter to believers who were scattered and facing many challenges. His purpose was to teach Christians how to live out genuine faith in their daily lives.

In James chapter 4, he warned believers about pride, selfish ambition, and depending on their own plans without acknowledging God. Some people were making future plans as if they controlled everything:

"Tomorrow we will go here, stay a year, do business, and make money."

Their problem was not planning itself. The problem was leaving God out of their plans and acting as though the future belonged completely to them.

James reminded them:

  • Life is short.
  • The future is in God's hands.
  • Every day is a gift from God.
  • We should seek God's will in everything we do.

What Does "Tomorrow Is Not Promised" Mean?

It means we should not live as if we have unlimited time.

We do not know:

  • What tomorrow will bring.
  • How long our earthly life will be.
  • What opportunities or challenges may come.

This truth should not create fear—it should encourage us to live wisely and faithfully today.

Lessons From the Passage

1. Make Plans, But Include God

God is not against planning.

Scripture: Book of Proverbs 16:9

"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps."

We can make plans, but we should surrender them to God.

2. Life Is Temporary

James compares life to a vapor—like steam or mist that appears briefly and disappears.

This reminds us:

  • Life is precious.
  • Time should not be wasted.
  • We should use our days to honor God.

3. Live for Today

Jesus also taught about not worrying about tomorrow.

Scripture: Matthew 6:34

"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself."

Jesus was teaching us to trust God daily instead of being consumed by fear about the future.

Important Life Lessons

  • Do not put off doing what God has called you to do.
  • Tell people you love them while you have the chance.
  • Forgive instead of holding onto bitterness.
  • Serve God with the time you have.
  • Be thankful for each day.

Life Application

Ask yourself:

  • Am I living today in a way that honors God?
  • Am I waiting for "someday" to do what God wants me to do?
  • Do I pray before making important decisions?
  • Am I using my time wisely?

Each day is an opportunity to:

  • Love God
  • Help others
  • Share the gospel
  • Grow spiritually
  • Make a difference

Key Takeaway

Tomorrow is not guaranteed, but today is a gift from God. We should make plans with humility, trust God's direction, and live each day with purpose. The goal is not just to have more time—it is to use the time God gives us for His glory.

Memory Verse (KJV)

James 4:14

"Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."
