Where Two or Three Are Gathered in My Name

Where Two or Three Are Gathered in My Name – Bible Lesson & Back Story

Primary Scripture: Gospel of Matthew 18:19–20 (KJV)

"Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."
— Matthew 18:19–20 (KJV)

Back Story

Jesus spoke these words while teaching His disciples about life within the community of believers. In Matthew 18, He explained how His followers should treat one another with humility, forgiveness, love, and accountability.

Earlier in the chapter, Jesus taught about:

  • Becoming humble like a little child (Matthew 18:1–5)
  • Caring for those who have wandered away from God through the Parable of the Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:10–14)
  • Restoring a believer who has sinned by speaking privately first, then involving one or two others if necessary, and finally bringing the matter before the church if needed (Matthew 18:15–17)

After explaining this process, Jesus emphasized the importance of believers praying and making decisions together according to God's will. He promised that when His followers gather in His name, He is present with them.

This passage is not teaching that God is only present when two or three people meet. God is always with His children. Rather, Jesus is assuring believers that He is especially present with and among them as they gather under His authority to pray, worship, encourage one another, and seek His will.

What Does "Gathered in My Name" Mean?

To gather in Jesus' name means to:

  • Meet for the purpose of honoring Jesus.
  • Seek His will rather than our own.
  • Pray according to His character and teachings.
  • Live in unity, love, and obedience.
  • Trust His authority over the gathering.

Simply mentioning Jesus' name is not enough. Our hearts and purpose should be centered on Him.

What Does "There Am I in the Midst of Them" Mean?

Jesus promises His presence among believers who gather faithfully.

His presence brings:

  • Encouragement
  • Wisdom
  • Unity
  • Peace
  • Guidance
  • Strength for serving Him

Even a small group of believers meeting in a home, classroom, or workplace can experience Christ's presence.

Important Lessons

  1. Jesus values fellowship among believers.
  2. Small gatherings are just as important to God as large crowds.
  3. Christians should pray together and encourage one another.
  4. Decisions affecting the church should be made prayerfully and according to God's Word.
  5. Christ promises to be spiritually present with those who gather to honor Him.

Life Application

Ask yourself:

  • Do I regularly gather with other believers?
  • Am I encouraging unity rather than division?
  • When I pray with others, am I seeking God's will?
  • Do I recognize Christ's presence when believers worship together?
  • Am I helping restore others with gentleness and love?

Look for opportunities to worship, pray, study the Bible, and serve with other Christians. Whether your group is large or small, Christ is with those who sincerely gather in His name.

Key Takeaway

Matthew 18:20 reminds believers that Jesus is actively present among His people when they gather in His name. In its context, this promise emphasizes unity, prayer, church fellowship, and restoring one another with love. It is a reminder that Christ is the center of His church, no matter how small the gathering.

Memory Verse (KJV)

Matthew 18:20

"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."
