Luke 14:23 - Back Story Luke 14:23 — “And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” (KJV) Luke 14:23 is part of Jesus’ Parable of the Great Supper (Luke 14:15–24). Joshua 1:8 - Back Story Joshua 1:8 appears at a major turning point in Israel’s story. Moses, who had led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the wilderness, had died. God was appointing Joshua, Moses’ assistant, to lead Israel into the Promised Land. In this chapter, God repeatedly tells Joshua to be strong and courageous. Joshua’s success would not come from military ability alone, but from faithfully following the instruction God had given through Moses. The verse says, in essence: Keep the Book of the Law close, meditate on it continually, and obey it. Then your way will prosper and you will have success. What “meditate” meant The Hebrew idea behind “meditate” carries the sense of quietly repeating, speaking, studying, or reflecting on God’s instruction. It was more than simply reading.
