Matthew 28:19

Matthew 28:19 — Backstory Matthew 28:19 (KJV): “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” Matthew 28:19 comes at the end of Jesus' earthly ministry , after His resurrection.  The disciples had seen Jesus crucified, buried, and then raised from the dead. Jesus met them in Galilee , where He had directed them to go. Before giving them this command, Jesus declared that all power was given unto Him in heaven and in earth . He then gave His disciples their mission: go into all nations and make disciples , teaching people about Him and baptizing those who believe. This was much bigger than the disciples simply preaching to people in their own communities. Jesus was sending them beyond Israel to “all nations.” The Gospel was to be shared with the entire world. Matthew 28:19 is part of what is commonly called the Great Commission . Jesus was preparing His followers to continue His work after He returned...

Acts 1:8

Acts 1:8 — Backstory Acts 1:8 (KJV): “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me…” Acts 1:8 takes place after Jesus’ resurrection and shortly before His ascension into heaven . Jesus is speaking to His disciples in Jerusalem. They were still wondering whether He was about to restore the kingdom to Israel, but Jesus redirected their attention from when the kingdom would come to what they were being called to do . Jesus told them they would receive power through the Holy Ghost . They were then to become His witnesses, beginning in Jerusalem , spreading to Judaea and Samaria , and ultimately reaching “the uttermost part of the earth.” This verse sets up the entire book of Acts. The disciples would no longer simply follow Jesus physically; through the Holy Spirit, they would carry His message to the world. The significance: Acts 1:8 is essentially Jesus' mission statement for the early Church —receive the Holy Spirit, b...

Hear: Romans 10:17

Hear Romans 10:17 (KJV) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Back Story The Apostle Paul wrote the Book of Romans to the believers in Rome to explain the gospel and God's plan of salvation. In Romans chapters 9–11, Paul focuses on Israel's unbelief. Although many Jews had the Scriptures and eagerly awaited the Messiah, many rejected Jesus Christ. Paul explains that righteousness does not come through keeping the Law but through faith in Christ. Earlier in chapter 10, Paul teaches that salvation is available to everyone who believes. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.   Romans 10:9 (KJV) He continues by emphasizing that salvation is offered equally to Jews and Gentiles. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.   Romans 10:13 (KJV) Paul then asks a series of important questions: How then shall they ca...

Believe: John 3:16

Believe John 3:16 (KJV) "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Back Story John 3 records a private conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus , a respected Pharisee, teacher of Israel, and member of the Jewish ruling council (the Sanhedrin). Nicodemus came to Jesus at night , possibly because he feared what others might think or because he wanted to speak with Jesus without interruption. He recognized that Jesus had come from God because of the miracles He performed. "Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God..."   John 3:2 (KJV) Instead of discussing miracles, Jesus immediately addressed Nicodemus's greatest need. "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."   John 3:3 (KJV) Nicodemus misunderstood, thinking Jesus was speaking about a second physical birth. Jesus explained that He was talking about a spiritual bir...

Repent: Acts 17:30

Repent Acts 17:30 (KJV) "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent:" Back Story Acts 17 records Paul 's missionary journey through Greece. After leaving Berea because of opposition from unbelieving Jews, Paul traveled to Athens , one of the world's greatest centers of philosophy, education, and religion. As Paul walked through the city, he was deeply troubled because Athens was filled with idols. Temples and statues dedicated to many different gods could be found throughout the city (Acts 17:16). Paul began sharing the gospel in the synagogue with the Jews and in the marketplace with anyone willing to listen. His message about Jesus and the resurrection attracted the attention of two groups of Greek philosophers—the Epicureans and the Stoics . Curious about his teaching, they brought Paul to the Areopagus (also called Mars' Hill), where new ideas were often discussed. Looking around, Paul noticed an a...

Confess: Romans 10:9-10

Confess Romans 10:9–10 (KJV) "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Back Story The Apostle Paul wrote the Book of Romans to the Christians living in Rome around A.D. 57 . His purpose was to explain the gospel clearly and show that salvation is available to everyone who believes in Jesus Christ. In Romans chapters 9–11, Paul addresses the spiritual condition of Israel. Although Israel had received God's promises and the Law, many rejected Jesus as the promised Messiah. They tried to become righteous through keeping the Law instead of trusting in Christ. Paul explains that no one can earn salvation by good works or by perfectly obeying the Law. Instead, God offers righteousness as a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ. Just before verses 9–10,...

Be Baptized: Acts 2:38

Be Baptized Acts 2:38 (KJV) "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Back Story Acts 2 takes place on the Day of Pentecost , about fifty days after Jesus' resurrection and ten days after His ascension into heaven. Before returning to the Father, Jesus told His disciples to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the promised Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4–8). About 120 believers were gathered together when the Holy Spirit came upon them. There was the sound of a mighty rushing wind, and what appeared to be tongues of fire rested on each believer. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, enabling Jews from many nations to hear the message of God in their own language (Acts 2:1–13). Some in the crowd were amazed, while others mocked the disciples and accused them of being drunk. Peter stood before the crowd and e...

II. Timothy 2:15/ Joshua 1:8

II. Timothy 2:15 — Back Story Scripture (KJV): “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” The Setting: Paul wrote II. Timothy while he was imprisoned in Rome, near the end of his life. He knew that Timothy would need to continue teaching the Gospel faithfully after Paul was gone. The Back Story: Paul encouraged Timothy to remain strong and committed to his calling. False teachers were spreading confusion among believers, so Timothy needed to know God's Word accurately and teach it correctly. The Meaning: Paul's instruction was not simply to gain knowledge. Timothy was to diligently study and live according to God's Word so that he could stand approved before God and faithfully teach the truth to others. Key Point: God's Word should be studied carefully, understood correctly, and taught faithfully. __________________________________________ Joshua 1:8 — Back Story Scripture (KJV): “This b...
