Confess: Romans 10:9-10

Confess

Romans 10:9–10 (KJV)

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

Back Story

The Apostle Paul wrote the Book of Romans to the Christians living in Rome around A.D. 57. His purpose was to explain the gospel clearly and show that salvation is available to everyone who believes in Jesus Christ.

In Romans chapters 9–11, Paul addresses the spiritual condition of Israel. Although Israel had received God's promises and the Law, many rejected Jesus as the promised Messiah. They tried to become righteous through keeping the Law instead of trusting in Christ.

Paul explains that no one can earn salvation by good works or by perfectly obeying the Law. Instead, God offers righteousness as a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ.

Just before verses 9–10, Paul writes:

"The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart..." (Romans 10:8)

Paul is teaching that the message of salvation is not difficult to find or understand. The gospel has already been preached, and every person has the opportunity to respond by faith.

What Romans 10:9–10 Means

Paul summarizes the simple response God asks of every person.

Believe in Your Heart

To believe means more than agreeing with facts. It is placing your trust in Jesus Christ—believing He died for your sins, was buried, and rose again.

Confess with Your Mouth

Confessing Jesus means openly acknowledging Him as Lord. Genuine faith is not something we hide; it naturally shows itself in what we say and how we live.

Salvation Is by Faith

These verses do not teach that saying certain words saves a person. Rather, confession is the outward expression of inward faith. Salvation comes through trusting in Jesus Christ.

Why These Verses Matter

Romans 10:9–10 reminds us that salvation is available to everyone—not because of religious rituals, good deeds, or keeping the Law, but because of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul continues this thought in the next verses:

  • Romans 10:11 – Whoever believes on Christ will not be ashamed.
  • Romans 10:12 – There is no difference between Jew and Gentile.
  • Romans 10:13 – "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Life Application

Romans 10:9–10 encourages us to:

  • Trust completely in Jesus Christ for salvation.
  • Believe that God raised Jesus from the dead.
  • Confess Jesus boldly as Lord.
  • Share the gospel so others can hear and believe.
  • Remember that salvation is God's gift of grace, received through faith.

Key Lesson

Salvation is not earned—it is received by faith in Jesus Christ. A heart that truly believes will not be ashamed to confess Him as Lord.
