Believe: John 3:16

Believe

John 3:16 (KJV)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Back Story

John 3 records a private conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a respected Pharisee, teacher of Israel, and member of the Jewish ruling council (the Sanhedrin).

Nicodemus came to Jesus at night, possibly because he feared what others might think or because he wanted to speak with Jesus without interruption. He recognized that Jesus had come from God because of the miracles He performed.

"Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God..."
John 3:2 (KJV)

Instead of discussing miracles, Jesus immediately addressed Nicodemus's greatest need.

"Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
John 3:3 (KJV)

Nicodemus misunderstood, thinking Jesus was speaking about a second physical birth. Jesus explained that He was talking about a spiritual birth—being born of water and of the Spirit—and that entrance into God's kingdom comes through spiritual renewal, not physical ancestry or religious position (John 3:4–8).

Jesus then reminded Nicodemus of an event from Israel's history. When poisonous snakes bit the Israelites in the wilderness, God instructed Moses to lift up a bronze serpent on a pole. Everyone who looked at it in faith lived (Numbers 21:4–9).

Jesus said this event pointed to Himself.

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up." John 3:14 (KJV)

Jesus was referring to His coming crucifixion, where He would be lifted up on the cross so that all who believe in Him could receive eternal life.

John 3:16 follows this explanation and reveals why God sent His Son.

What John 3:16 Means

God So Loved the World

God's love extends to all people, regardless of nationality, background, or past sins.

He Gave His Only Begotten Son

God demonstrated His love by sending Jesus Christ to die as the sacrifice for the sins of the world.

Whosoever Believeth

Salvation is offered to anyone who places genuine faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

Should Not Perish

Those who believe are rescued from eternal separation from God.

Have Everlasting Life

Believers receive eternal life—a relationship with God that begins now and continues forever.

Why This Verse Matters

John 3:16 is often called the heart of the Gospel because it summarizes God's plan of salvation in one verse.

It teaches that:

  • God's love is the reason for salvation.
  • Jesus is God's gift to the world.
  • Faith in Christ is the way to receive eternal life.
  • Eternal life is available to everyone who believes.

The following verses continue this message:

  • John 3:17 — God sent His Son to save the world, not to condemn it.
  • John 3:18 — Those who believe in Christ are not condemned.
  • John 3:36 — Those who believe in the Son have everlasting life.

Life Application

John 3:16 encourages us to:

  • Believe in Jesus Christ as Savior.
  • Trust in God's love and His promise of eternal life.
  • Share the Gospel with others.
  • Remember that salvation is God's gift, not something we can earn.
  • Live each day with gratitude for Christ's sacrifice.

Key Lesson

John 3:16 reveals the greatest expression of God's love. Because God loved the world, He gave His Son, Jesus Christ, so that everyone who believes in Him can receive forgiveness of sins and the gift of everlasting life.
