Hear: Romans 10:17

Hear

Romans 10:17 (KJV)

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Back Story

The Apostle Paul wrote the Book of Romans to the believers in Rome to explain the gospel and God's plan of salvation.

In Romans chapters 9–11, Paul focuses on Israel's unbelief. Although many Jews had the Scriptures and eagerly awaited the Messiah, many rejected Jesus Christ. Paul explains that righteousness does not come through keeping the Law but through faith in Christ.

Earlier in chapter 10, Paul teaches that salvation is available to everyone who believes.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9 (KJV)

He continues by emphasizing that salvation is offered equally to Jews and Gentiles.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 10:13 (KJV)

Paul then asks a series of important questions:

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
And how shall they hear without a preacher? Romans 10:14 (KJV)

He explains that God sends people to proclaim the good news so others can hear about Jesus.

How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace...
Romans 10:15 (KJV)

After explaining the importance of preaching the gospel, Paul concludes with Romans 10:17.

What Romans 10:17 Means

Faith Comes by Hearing

Saving faith does not begin with human wisdom, feelings, or personal effort. It begins when people hear the message of the gospel.

Hearing by the Word of God

The "Word of God" refers to the message about Jesus Christ. As God's Word is preached, read, taught, and shared, the Holy Spirit uses it to awaken faith in those who believe.

Paul's point is that people cannot believe in Christ unless they first hear the message about Him.

Why This Verse Matters

Romans 10:17 highlights the importance of sharing God's Word.

People cannot respond to the gospel if they have never heard it. This is why preaching, teaching, missions, evangelism, and personal witnessing are essential parts of the Christian life.

The verse also reminds believers to spend time reading and studying Scripture because faith continues to grow as we hear and apply God's Word.

Life Application

Romans 10:17 encourages us to:

  • Read God's Word regularly.
  • Listen carefully to biblical teaching.
  • Share the gospel with others.
  • Support those who preach and teach God's Word.
  • Trust that God's Word has the power to change lives.

Key Lesson

Faith begins when people hear the message of Jesus Christ. As God's Word is faithfully preached, taught, read, and shared, the Holy Spirit uses that truth to bring people to faith and help believers grow stronger in their walk with God.
