Miracle #21
The story of Jesus healing many at Gennesaret is found in Mark 6:53-56 and Matthew 14:34-36.
The Story:
The crossing: When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there
The recognition: As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus
The response: They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was
Following Jesus: And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces
The plea: They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak
The healings: And all who touched it (even just the edge of his cloak) were healed
Universal healing: Matthew adds: and all who touched him were healed
Significance:
- This occurred immediately after Jesus walked on water and calmed the storm
- Gennesaret was a fertile plain on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee
- Jesus's fame had spread so widely that people recognized him immediately
- The people's response was urgent and organized—they "ran" throughout the region
- They carried the sick on mats to wherever Jesus was—showing determination and faith
- This was a mobile healing ministry—Jesus moved through villages, towns, and countryside
- People brought the sick to the marketplaces—public gathering places where Jesus would pass
- Their faith was so great they believed even touching his cloak would heal them
- This echoes the woman with the issue of blood who touched Jesus's cloak (Mark 5:25-34)
- The edge/fringe of his cloak likely refers to the tassels (tzitzit) Jewish men wore as commanded in Numbers 15:38-39
- These tassels were reminders of God's commandments
- The people's faith was rewarded—"all who touched it were healed"
- This was mass healing on an unprecedented scale
- No one was turned away—everyone who came in faith was healed
- The healings were complete and universal—not partial or selective
- Jesus's widespread fame and reputation as a healer
- The people's desperate faith and determination to reach him
- That even indirect contact with Jesus (touching his cloak) brought healing
- Jesus's unlimited healing power—he could heal multitudes
- His accessibility—he went to villages, towns, and countryside
- His compassion—he didn't refuse anyone who came
- That faith, even simple faith (just touching his cloak), releases God's power
- The fulfillment of messianic expectations—the Messiah would bring widespread healing
- Jesus's willingness to be interrupted and surrounded by needy people
This story powerfully illustrates:
The healing at Gennesaret demonstrates Jesus's tireless compassion and unlimited power to heal. It shows that he made himself available to all who sought him, and that even the simplest act of faith—reaching out to touch him—was met with complete healing. This mass healing event reveals Jesus as the compassionate Messiah who brings wholeness to all who come to him in faith.
