Exodus Brief Summary/Notes

Sometimes studying the bible is difficult because it can be hard to decipher/understand.
These notes are for the encouragement of the study of God's word daily, (only to be used/read with your Bible.) Not a Bible replacement.


Chapter 1:
The Israelites multiply in Egypt. A new Pharaoh fears them and enslaves them. He orders all Hebrew baby boys to be killed.
Chapter 2:
Moses is born, hidden by his mother, and adopted by Pharaoh's daughter. After killing an Egyptian, Moses flees to Midian, marries Zipporah, and becomes a shepherd.
Chapter 3:
God appears to Moses in the burning bush and calls him to lead Israel out of Egypt. God reveals His name: "I AM THAT I AM."
Chapter 4:
God gives Moses miraculous signs and appoints Aaron to speak for him. Moses returns to Egypt.
Chapter 5:
Moses and Aaron ask Pharaoh to let Israel worship God. Pharaoh refuses and increases the Israelites' workload.
Chapter 6:
God renews His covenant with Israel and promises deliverance. The genealogy of Moses and Aaron is recorded.
Chapter 7:
Moses and Aaron confront Pharaoh. Aaron's rod becomes a serpent. The first plague turns the Nile River into blood.
Chapter 8:
God sends the plagues of frogs, lice (or gnats), and flies. Pharaoh repeatedly hardens his heart.
Chapter 9:
The plagues of livestock disease, boils, and hail strike Egypt. Pharaoh still refuses to obey God.
Chapter 10:
Locusts devour the land, followed by three days of darkness. Pharaoh remains stubborn.
Chapter 11:
God announces the final plague—the death of every firstborn in Egypt.
Chapter 12:
The first Passover is instituted. The tenth plague occurs, and Pharaoh finally releases the Israelites.
Chapter 13:
God instructs Israel to remember the Passover and consecrate the firstborn. God leads them by a pillar of cloud and fire.
Chapter 14:
The Israelites cross the Red Sea on dry ground. Pharaoh's army is destroyed when the waters return.
Chapter 15:
Moses and Israel sing a song of praise. God provides sweet water at Marah after the people complain.
Chapter 16:
God provides manna from heaven and quail for food in the wilderness.
Chapter 17:
Water comes from the rock at Horeb. Israel defeats the Amalekites while Moses' hands are held up.
Chapter 18:
Jethro advises Moses to appoint judges to help govern the people.
Chapter 19:
Israel arrives at Mount Sinai. God prepares the people to receive His covenant.
Chapter 20:
God gives the Ten Commandments and other instructions for worship.
Chapter 21:
God gives laws concerning servants, violence, and personal responsibility.
Chapter 22:
Additional laws cover theft, property, justice, and compassion.
Chapter 23:
God gives laws about justice, Sabbath observance, annual feasts, and promises to guide Israel into the Promised Land.
Chapter 24:
The covenant is confirmed. Moses goes up Mount Sinai to meet with God.
Chapter 25:
God gives instructions for building the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, the table for the bread, and the golden lampstand.
Chapter 26:
Instructions are given for constructing the Tabernacle.
Chapter 27:
God gives plans for the bronze altar, the courtyard, and the lamp oil.
Chapter 28:
Instructions are given for the priests' garments, especially those of Aaron.
Chapter 29:
Aaron and his sons are consecrated as priests. Daily offerings are established.
Chapter 30:
God gives instructions for the altar of incense, the census offering, the bronze basin, the anointing oil, and the sacred incense.
Chapter 31:
Bezalel and Oholiab are chosen to build the Tabernacle. The Sabbath is emphasized. Moses receives the stone tablets.
Chapter 32:
While Moses is on the mountain, Israel worships the golden calf. Moses breaks the tablets, and the idol is destroyed.
Chapter 33:
God promises to continue leading Israel. Moses asks to see God's glory.
Chapter 34:
God gives Moses a second set of stone tablets. The covenant is renewed, and Moses' face shines after meeting with God.
Chapter 35:
The people willingly bring offerings and begin building the Tabernacle according to God's instructions.
Chapter 36:
The skilled workers build the Tabernacle. The people give more than enough offerings.
Chapter 37:
The Ark of the Covenant, table, lampstand, altar of incense, and anointing oil are made.
Chapter 38:
The bronze altar, courtyard, and other furnishings are completed. An inventory of materials is recorded.
Chapter 39:
The priests' garments are completed. Moses inspects the work and blesses the people.
Chapter 40:
The Tabernacle is erected and dedicated. The glory of the Lord fills it, and God's presence leads Israel by the cloud and pillar of fire.

Key Theme of Exodus
The book of Exodus tells how God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, established His covenant with them at Mount Sinai, gave them the Ten Commandments, and instructed them to build the Tabernacle so He could dwell among His people.

It is the clear communication of God’s plan of salvation so that people can hear, understand, and respond to the Gospel.
